Welcome to Villers-la-Vigne

Dear visitor to our little “Clos du Bonheur” (enclosure of happiness) at Villers-la-Vigne,

Thank you for your interest in our passion for winemaking in Belgium.

Our greatest wish is to share with you our joy in caring for the 800 vines nestled within the enclosed stone walls of the beautiful abbey of Villers-la-Ville while acting as responsible stewards of the land in respect to its terroir, its sustainable development and the environment. Quality without compromise is the guiding principle of the men and women of Villers-la-Vigne who nurture the three red and white grape varieties in the vineyard and who craft expressive red, white and rosé wines in the cellar.

Imagine this magical place, in the ruins of a majestic Cistercian abbey, in itself a major historical and cultural monument in Wallonia. Imagine a group of friends who welcome and accept all who visit, who share with one another a beautiful, terraced vineyard along with its prestigious winery across the cobbled road, both steeped in history and imbued with a spirit of innovation. Imagine products of surprising quality that fill your glasses with sunshine under a magnificent Brabant sky.

The Villers winemakers find themselves amongst the flowering rows of Regent, Phoenix and Muscaris grapevines for twenty or more Saturdays a year, after first having passed through the hulking metal door that opens unexpectedly onto a secluded garden of happiness, a veritable diamond among the Belgian vineyards.

Add to all of this a choir of winemakers who sing Medieval and Renaissance songs, annual study voyages to the wine regions of neighbouring countries, guided vineyard and cellar visits throughout the year - with or without reservations, enduring friendships with twinned vineyards all over Belgium, and an annual jazz evening in the midst of this Cistercian abbey, the highly anticipated “Jazz au Vignoble” event.

No, you are not dreaming . . . you are at Villers-la-Vigne.
Come and join us . . . you will see . . . the joy . . . it’s contagious.

La Confrérie du Vignoble de l'abbaye de Villers-en-Brabant (the association of the vineyard at Villers Abbey in Brabant) offers guided tours year-round of its vineyard and winery followed by a wine tasting. This visit can be combined with admission to the abbey’s ruins.

The guided tour of the vineyard begins with a quick history of wine and its arrival in our region, particularly with the Cistercian monks at the Abbey of Villers-la-Ville. The tour continues with an explanation of our current vineyard practices. From the selection of grape varieties to the planting, pruning and cultivation of the vines our methods are guided by the association’s belief in good stewardship of the land and respect for the environment. The objectives, activities and membership details of the Confrérie (association) are also presented. In the winery we learn how today’s Confrérie turns grapes into wine, and we end the visit with a tasting of our own Villers-la-Vigne wine or, if stocks are exhausted, an organic Belgian wine.
Duration: 1 ½ – 2 hrs.
